Exploring Red Mountain and Kiona Winery
Washington State has fast become one of the most exciting wine regions in the United States., especially known for its red wines, which thrive in the unique terroirs found throughout the state.
As the second-largest wine producer in the country, Washington has developed a rich, diverse wine culture, with regions like Red Mountain at the forefront of its red wine legacy.
Red Mountain AVA, a small yet powerful appellation, sits in the warmest, sunniest part of Washington State. Its 4,040 acres, primarily a southwest-facing slope, are renowned for growing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah, among many other varieties.
How was Red Mountain discovered as a potential Grand Cru area?
In 1972, Jim Holmes and John Williams, both General Electric engineers, purchased an 80-acre plot on what was then barren, remote land. With no infrastructure in place - no roads, water, or power - the decision to plant vineyards seemed unlikely to succeed. Yet, they were inspired by Washington State University research that hinted at the region's potential for growing wine grapes.
By 1975, the two had planted the first vines, initially experimenting with Riesling, Chardonnay, and even Cabernet Sauvignon, a grape thought to be too demanding for Washington’s climate at the time
The unique geology of Red Mountain, created by ancient floods that left a blend of sandy loam and gravel, proved to be ideal for grape growing. Its southwest-facing slopes and proximity to the Yakima River create a warm, dry climate with significant day-to-night temperature swings.
This fosters the development of smaller, thick-skinned grapes that lead to the structured, tannic red wines that the region is now famous for. Their gamble ultimately paid off, and by 2001, Red Mountain was officially designated as an AVA, known today for producing some of Washington’s most highly regarded wines.
The intense heat and mineral-rich soil create wines with bold structure, vibrant acidity and excellent aging potential. Its name, a nod to the red-hued cheatgrass that covers the region in spring, belies the region’s real star: distinctive “dusty” red wines with a mineral and savory edge, giving them a character akin to those from renowned wine-growing areas of Europe.
